Help desk

The ongoing partnership with the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) supports the IFRC technical help desk, which can be emailed on ifrc@iri.columbia.edu.

This aims to respond within 24 hours to climate-related questions from Red Cross Red Crescent disaster managers around the world, providing advice on the latest research on seasonal predictability and climate trends.

In 2013, for example, as reconstruction in Haiyan-affected areas of the Philippines began, help-desk scientists were able to advise on “building back safer”, taking climate projections for the region into account.

The IFRC map room developed in collaboration with IRI, provides global forecasts to the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement that are posted on the Climate Centre website at three-month intervals.

It includes useful “forecasts in context” as well as information on possible early action.
