IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain has said there is “no greater threat facing humanity than the climate and environmental crises” and no greater priority for the International Federation.

Speaking on X/Twitter yesterday for Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22 April, he added: “We must ensure that all our responses and activities adopt a climate- and environmentally friendly approach, prioritizing nature-based solutions where appropriate.

“This #EarthDay, we’re calling for greater investment in protecting and restoring nature. Because by protecting nature, we protect people. We have only one Earth. Let’s protect it, together.”

Climate Centre Director Aditya Bahadur said yesterday: “Red Cross Red Crescent societies around the world are on the front lines of the fight to reduce climate risk.

“We at the Climate Centre are privileged to be able to support them with the know-how to achieve meaningful climate action.”

Electric and hybrid options

In his own statement for the special day, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said: “This year is critical. All countries must create new national climate action plans that align with [the Paris Agreement of] limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius – essential to avoid the worst of the climate catastrophe.

“This is a vital chance to seize the benefits of clean power. I urge all countries to take it, with the G20 leading the way.”

The UN said yesterday said its Local Leaders around the world were encouraging broader climate action and demonstrating the importance of local leadership in tackling global challenges, presenting case studies from the Indian state of Maharashtra, California, and Morocco’s Guelmim-Oued Noun region.

The American Red Cross, meanwhile, says it has now reduced its carbon footprint by 19 per cent in the past year through sustainability projects.

“As part of our commitment to sustainability, we’ve replaced gas-powered vehicles with electric and hybrid options to cut down on emissions and pollution,” the National Society said on X/Twitter yesterday.

Critical information

Hybrid vehicles (photo) in their hundreds have been added to the American Red Cross eco-friendly fleet, helping teams deliver their lifesaving mission more sustainably. “What sustainable practices are you incorporating into your life?” it asked.

Among scores of statements and contributions for Earth Day was this remarkable video, shot from space for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, that looks back over the planet during the past year.

Today’s advanced satellites provide critical information that helps forecasts warn of severe weather and environmental hazards, the agency said.

“As we celebrate Earth Day, let us marvel at the wonders of our planet and reflect on our responsibility to cherish and protect it. Together, let’s ensure that the view from space remains a symbol of hope and inspiration for generations to come,” NOAA added.
