Reporting on recent research
4 October 2012

Two of the Climate Centre’s junior researchers from King’s College London this summer were located in East Africa

Gillian Logie wrote her dissertation on the Partners for Resilience work in Ethiopia, and was able to travel to the field and assess community engagement with ecosystems and climate. A summary highlights that communities were very interested in preventing ecosystem degradation, and that the topic of climate change adaptation is difficult for many to understand/implement. Gillian did a great job dealing with many of the unexpected logistical hiccups that often happen in the field.

Hannah Tankard worked at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and with Kenya Red Cross to interview female pastoralists who have migrated to growing urban centres, and gather information on their risk perception. Her summary details risks faced by these women and how risk perceptions change depending relative to urbanization. Steve will be carrying this forward as part of a larger project on how to deal with drought risk in the arid lands, and the research holds much potential.

The Climate Centre would like to thank both Hannah and Gillian for their hard work and interesting research this summer!
